Secure, reliable and scalable cloud services

“I think it’s time we moved to the cloud…”

Thinking about taking your business on a journey to the cloud? Cloud computing continues to revolutionise the way businesses and their teams operate in today’s digital landscape.

Moving to the cloud offers unrivalled levels of security, reliability and scalability. Cloud solutions will enable your people to access information, systems and data from wherever they are securely, allow your business to scale on-demand, help you transition your business into a digital-age modern workplace, and generate longer term cost savings for your business to boot.

Business consulting for cloud

“Will the cloud be right for us?”

We know the idea of going all-in cloud might seem overwhelming! But it’s not the only option! The intrinsic value of cloud itself is that solutions can be sliced, diced and combined in a myriad of ways to suit your business’ specific demands. This might mean migrating or integrating legacy systems, meeting particular compliance requirements for the storage of your data, or architecting inventive cloud solutions to suit the unique demands of your industry sector.

This is why any cloud conversation has to start with a business-first approach and be driven by your desired business outcomes. Our consulting-led approach means you’ll be integrating cloud into your new digital-age business model, not the other way around!

Public and private cloud options

“Should we be going public or private cloud, and what does this mean?”

Depending on your business’ operational and compliance needs, you might want to explore how to leverage Public Cloud options, Private Cloud deployments or Hybrid Cloud combinations of the two. Making this choice will involve some strategic business discussions around your need for flexibility and scalability and the nature of your business-critical operations.

With the best and latest cloud expertise on offer, we can help you navigate the options to design the optimal public, private or anything-in-between cloud option for your business.

Cloud migration and integration

“What can we expect when we introduce or expand our cloud services?”

We have a tried and tested process for migrating small-to-medium-sized up to enterprise-grade clients to the cloud. Not only are you fully involved in mapping and understanding this process, we provide you with milestone targets and updates along the way. Introducing cloud services into your business is designed to make things faster and easier for your team, and that’s our goal too.

Mind you, cloud is not a set-and-forget proposition though. As cloud service offerings, tools and technologies evolve, we will keep bringing to the table the best the industry has to offer, provide solutions for seamless updates and integration, and ensure your business stays ahead of the curve.

What you need to know about cloud computing

What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing refers to the delivery of computing services – such as servers, software applications and databases –  over the internet rather than on-premises. Instead of owning and managing physical servers, firewalls and network switches, you can build and configure a virtual network in the cloud that has all of the features and attributes of your physical hardware, but pay only for your usage rather than the outright cost of the equipment.

What are the three main types of cloud services?

Software as a Service (SaaS)

Software as a Service is the term used to describe the delivery of a cloud-based software solution over the Internet. Typically this type of service is billed under a pay-per-use or subscription model. Office 365 is an example of SaaS product where users access cloud-based email, calendar and office tools over the Internet, based on a service agreement with a cloud service provider that ensures the security, availability, and recoverability of their data.

Platform as a Service (PaaS)

Platform as a Service resources are made available over secure Internet connection again on a pay-as-you-go basis. As the name suggests, they provide developers with a full-cycle cloud-based platform for creating, testing and developing, then deploying, managing and updating software applications. The beauty of PaaS resources is that they allow users to concentrate on managing their organisation’s applications and services without having to worry about managing and maintaining the required licences, complex server environments to house supporting technologies, or other infrastructure or middleware resources.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

Infrastructure as a Service refers to virtual cloud-based IT infrastructure being made available over the Internet, on an as-needed and pay-as-you-go basis. This might take the form of IP addresses, servers, operating systems, data storage, databases, even high-powered big data analysis. These resources are often pooled from multiple physical servers and networks, spread across multiple data centres, which gives you greater flexibility and capacity to scale on-demand, without the need to manage or maintain your own data center or server infrastructure. Some examples of IaaS products would include Datto Backup and Microsoft Azure.

What are the benefits of cloud computing?

There is no one-size fits all solution for cloud. It is important to research and consider different options to find the cloud computing solution that will be the best fit for your business and end users. Any decisions your organisation makes about cloud should integral to achieving your organisations’ broader strategic business technology objectives.

The right cloud solution for your business will offer you a wide range of features and benefits, including:

Unrivaled Reliability

Cloud infrastructure by design is built and configured across networks of physical servers that may be hosted in different data centres, in different physical locations (even in different countries), all sharing and balancing the load of delivering your valuable line of business applications and associated information. What does this mean? If one of the servers fails, another will immediately cover your service needs with little to no effect on availability.

Managed Security

Professionally managed cloud resources are typically housed within secure, climate controlled data centres. Physical access to the servers is not permitted, nor is it required to facilitate delivery of the services. Cloud service providers are constantly monitoring and maintaining security on a scale that no organisation could ever match on premise. Sophisticated firewalls can be added to the collection of services purchased increasing security to a level that meets your particular needs.

On-Demand Scalability

Resources can be easily increased and reduced as the needs within your business change. There is typically no delay in expanding capacity and due to the shared nature of computing resources within a cloud computing environment there is no wastage as released resources become available for someone else to use.

Modern Flexibility

Cloud offers end users in your organisation the flexibity to work securely from wherever their work day takes them. Additionally, modern cloud service providers provide a set of management tools to empower the self management of individualised cloud computing resources. The seemingly infinite array of features available enable any number of possible of cloud computing configurations.

What considerations are there when moving to the cloud?

Before jumping all-in cloud-first, there are some due diligence considerations that are critical to ensure you make the right decision around cloud and that the decision you make will work for your organisation.

Some essential questions to ask in planning your cloud transformation include:

Do we have the bandwidth?

By design cloud services facilitate the faster and larger scale transfer of information and data between your users, offices and cloud servers. If you haven’t planned your resourcing needs appropriately you may very quickly find yourself needing a much bigger internet connection to handle all of the extra traffic. Make sure you recalculate the potential change in your internet traffic needs in the planning stages before changing over to a cloud hosted service.

What’s in the fine print?

By using and leveraging cloud services, you are essentially transferring the responsibility for the management of your resources to a trusted external party. Like all services being provided by external vendors, however, it’s important that you understand what is and is not part of the service being delivered. Understand the legal and compliance requirements for your business and ensure that your cloud provider’s terms of service align with your requirements.

Where is my data going to be housed?

If you’re in a regulated industry or do business with government departments or agencies, you may be subject to restrictions that relate to data sovereignty. Data sovereignty means that an organisation’s data is subject to the laws and privacy regulations applicable in the country or location where that data is collected and/or stored. Understanding your requirements in relation to data sovereignty is critical is assessing the suitability of any cloud service arrangement.

How is my data being backed up?

Data is often automatically backed up as part of the services offered by a cloud service provider. However, the standard methods of backup they offer may require a full server restore in order to retrieve a single file. Therefore it is often a good idea to consider additional backup means for individual software applications.
